Suppressing religious freedom and the main responsible person persecuting the Christian Shengjia Family Church preacher Deng Yanxiang. In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party authorities have strengthened the management and revision of the Regulations on Religious Affairs, and frequently required Shengjia Church to join and accept the management of the "Three-Self Church" under the Chinese Communist Party. Due to repeated rejections by Shengjia Church and others, the local Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau and Shunde District Police have repeatedly harassed and warned them; in May 2023, the "Shengjia Co-Study and Mutual Aid Center" (i.e. the Bible study training class) opened by Shengjia Church was suddenly jointly investigated and dealt with by dozens of people including Shunde District Police, Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau and community personnel. All teaching equipment and learning materials used by the church were confiscated, the church gate was sealed, and the church deacon and Deng Yanxiang were taken away by the police; they were formally detained on suspicion of "illegal business operation"; and were subsequently arrested on the same charge. In January 2025, Deng Yanxiang was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and a fine of 3,000 yuan by the court for "illegal business operation"; the other four were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 1 year and 2 months to 1 year and 5 months.
